Lance G. Johnson

Of Counsel

BIO:

Lance Johnson has a wide-ranging IP practice that helps innovative clients protect their inventions, published works, and business identities. With 30 years of experience, Mr. Johnson uses combinations of patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and appropriate agreement terms to provide an infrastructure against competitors and legal grounds to assert against those who would seek to harm the business. Mr. Johnson has also served as an expert witness on patent law matters and has been trained as a mediator, using that training to enhance the prospects for favorable settlements on behalf of his clients.
Lance Johnson started his career as a patent examiner, became an associate handling prosecution, litigation support, and prior art studies for freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement issues. He progressed to partner and was responsible for prosecuting and defending infringement litigation, providing counsel to clients on new products, and defending his opinions in court. In one case, Mr. Johnson led a team to prosecute the infringement of six patents with calculated damages, before settlement was reached, in excess of $250 million apart from any enhancements or fee awards.
Mr. Johnson has familiarity with a variety of technologies, many of which have been influenced by his early history living in Iowa farm country. His practice has focused on agricultural products (‘cidal products, growth regulators, etc.), biotech and chemical technologies used in the agrochem market, and the manufacturing processes that are used to make those products. He has also represented clients in connection with small molecule pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical grade extracts, Omega-3 fatty acid products and therapies, medical therapies, coatings (as sealants, for disinfection, and preservative), various composites and polymeric fibers, steel formulations, silicon carbide whisker reinforced cutting tools, flame retardants, scents and scent components, reverse osmosis membranes, and veterinary pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Johnson is admitted the patent bar of the US Patent and Trademark Office as well as the state bars of Virginia, the District of Columbia; the US district courts for the Eastern District of Virginia and District of Columbia; the courts of appeal for the Fourth and Seventh Circuit; and the US Supreme Court.
